Our April Meeting

The following is the text of the Press release that I sent out about our April meeting. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have received any mention in the local press, this week or last.

Misunderstandings of Science

There are many ways in which science is misunderstood, even among scientists themselves! Is science a matter of belief, or of social consensus, or of ultimate truth? Can scientists be truly objective? Are scientists responsible for technology? When scientists disagree, who decides? You will probably have your own questions.

Alexander Hellemans, who is co-author of several books on the History of Science, and has contributed articles to many science journals, will introduce a discussion on "Misunderstandings of Science" at the Hastings Humanists meeting on Thursday 15th April. This will be held at the Arts Forum, 36 Marina, from 6:30 pm. There is an entrance fee of £2. Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a humanist, just remember to bring your questions and join in the discussion.

I find it really irritating that the local press is more than happy to advertise religious services and other types of superstitious nonsense but they don't like to even acknowledge that there are people in this area who do not believe in woo!

further to my earlier comment, i have a copy of the "citizen's guide" from the observer group of newspapers. this guide has listings of all sorts of clubs, associations, support groups, churches etc. (a certain mystic person has at least 4 listings!) yet look as hard as i can, i cannot see hastings humanists anywhere.

  3. Well we've only been going since February 2009. It is frustrating trying to get something in the press though. Partly this is because our meetings are on Thursday which is six days after the paper appears, and to get in the press release has to reach them it seems at least six days before, which means sending it out on a Sunday. This month I sent it even earlier. Probably all the election news took up the space, though they still had plenty for the mock crucifixion.

  4. As reported on my Jeepyjay Diary blog I walked along to the Arts Forum this afternoon to check it was OK for tomorrow's meeting. There is a sort of mobile, formed of tubes of yellow plastic held together by wire, hanging in an awkward position, but hopefully it will be moved before the meeting. Also some of the artwork on display uses distinctly religious symbolism. A lot of the artists who display there seem to be either religious or new-agey. Perhaps we should get together a display by a group of humanist artists.
